The Girl Who Started Something New

Earlier today, Jayne Ann Krentz revealed the full cover for her upcoming novel, The Girl Who Knew Too Much (written under the pseudonym Amanda Quick) on her Facebook page.

In her next historical novel, Ms. Quick is going to take on a whole new era – the 1930s! Romantic suspense against the backdrop of old Hollywood seems like the perfect recipe for a great story, so I am very excited to see where she takes her latest novel.

The American 1930s is an era that hasn’t been explored all that much in the romance genre. Writers, like Johanna Lindsey, have taken on the Wild West – which makes for a romantic read – but Old Hollywood seems to be left mainly alone…with only some of the older novels by Anne Stuart coming to mind. In fact, Goodreads lists only a total of a little over fifty books set in this time frame – which is a very small number considering how large the romance industry actually is.

And it’s not just the American 1930s that lack exploration, but whole other eras and even countries – with that much left unwritten, imagine how many stories we’ve missed out on. Oh, the lost words!

I hope other historical romance writers begin to expand out of the Regency and Victorian eras in Britain – not that I don’t love those eras, because I do and I will always read more stories set in these times – but for those rainy days when you crave variety, it’s time to tell new stories!

Thank you Amanda Quick for taking on something new and for reminding me that there are always new stories to tell!

The ever grateful,

Rika Ashton

Cover Reveal: ROCK HARD by Nalini Singh

Hi all,

Just taking a short break from writing and teacherly-stuff to bring you the cover reveal for Nalini Singh‘s upcoming installment from the Rock Kiss series, Rock Hard.

ROCK HARD

In New York Times Bestselling author Nalini Singh’s newest contemporary romance, passion ignites between a gorgeous, sinfully sexy man who built himself up from nothing and a shy woman who has a terrible secret in her past…

Wealthy businessman Gabriel Bishop rules the boardroom with the same determination and ruthlessness that made him a rock star on the rugby field. He knows what he wants, and he’ll go after it no-holds-barred.

And what he wants is Charlotte Baird.

Charlotte knows she’s a mouse. Emotionally scarred and painfully shy, she just wants to do her job and remain as invisible as possible. But the new CEO—a brilliant, broad-shouldered T-Rex of a man who growls and storms through the office, leaving carnage in his wake—clearly has other plans. Plans that may be equal parts business and bedroom.

If Charlotte intends to survive this battle of wits and hearts, the mouse will have to learn to wrangle the T-Rex. Game on.

I gotta say, this is my favourite cover from the series so far. Wow, Gabriel is gorgeous – or at least the slight teaser of his jaw promises sinful beauty!

What do you think of the latest cover? Love it, hate it, or couldn’t care less?

P.S: If you can’t wait another month for the release date, go ahead and read an excerpt from Rock Hard on Ms. Singh’s website.

A New Nalini Singh Cover…SLAVE TO SENSATION Gets a Makeover

When Nalini Singh announced that she would be posting a brand new cover on Facebook, just a little over twelve hours ago, to say I was excited would have been an extreme understatement. I was ecstatic, delirious, my curiosity roused beyond relief…so I was very happy when the cover was revealed a few hours ago.

I actually liked the original cover for Slave to Sensation, so I won’t be upgrading my copy. but if you weren’t a fan of the purple cover (below) now is your chance. If only they would reissue Angel’s Blood with a cover to fit the rest of the Guild Hunter series.

What do you think? Another amazing paranormal cover, non?

Cover Reveal: SHARDS OF HOPE by Nalini Singh

Check out the incomparable cover for Nalini Singh‘s upcoming Psy-Changeling masterpiece, Shards of Hope:

The “smoldering heat, epic romance, and awesome action” of Nalini Singh’s New York Times bestselling series continues as two Arrows find themselves caught in a chilling conspiracy that spans all three races…

Awakening wounded in a darkened cell, their psychic abilities blocked, Aden and Zaira know they must escape. But when the lethal soldiers break free from their mysterious prison, they find themselves in a harsh, inhospitable landscape far from civilization. Their only hope for survival is to make it to the hidden home of a predatory changeling pack that doesn’t welcome outsiders.

And they must survive. A shadowy enemy has put a target on the back of the Arrow squad, an enemy that cannot be permitted to succeed in its deadly campaign. Aden will cross any line to keep his people safe for this new future, where even an assassin might have hope of a life beyond blood and death and pain. Zaira has no such hope. She knows she’s too damaged to return from the abyss. Her driving goal is to protect Aden, protect the only person who has ever come back for her no matter what.

This time, even Aden’s passionate determination may not be enough—because the emotionless chill of Silence existed for a reason. For the violent, and the insane, and the irreparably broken…like Zaira.

Do we love it? Hate it? Or are we stuck on our neighbour’s fence about this one?

Well, cover or no…I’ve only got one thing to say to Aden:

So bring it on!

Cover Reveal: ROCK COURTSHIP by Nalini Singh

Welcome to the exclusive cover reveal for Nalini Singh‘s Rock Courtship! That’s right David – famously known as the “Gentleman of Rock” – and publicist Thea have their own story and we finally get to see what was written in those mysterious memos. I have a feeling that it’s going to be HOT! 😉

And speaking of hot…check out this cover:

rock courtship cover

New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh’s new contemporary romance novella is pure hard rock and scorching heat…

What happens when the Gentleman of Rock decides to play dirty?

A drummer for the hottest rock band on the planet, David has a single, powerful weakness: Thea, the band’s publicist and the woman who steals his breath away with her every move.

Only problem is, Thea doesn’t date clients–or musicians. Emotionally scarred by a cheating ex, she’s not about to risk her heart with a man who has groupies buzzing around him like flies. Even if his sexy smile ties her up in knots.

What she doesn’t know is that David is a one-woman man…and he’s madly in love with her. David’s determined to prove he’s worth the risk, and willing to court her, step by exquisite step. Thea’s about to discover just how long and hard this handsome drummer can play.

nalini bioRefreshingly enough, the “Gentleman of Rock” is actually fully dressed on the cover, which only makes him more fun to mentally undress! 😉

The good news is that it’s not too long a wait for the novella – it releases on September 30th, only a few more weeks to go. 😀

But if you’re like me and completely impatient, you can stop by Ms. Singh’s blog to find out how to sign up for ARCs of Rock Courtship. (I’ve already gotten my copy – yes, they work fast – and I’ll be posting a review soon.) And if you haven’t already read it, book one of the Rock Kiss series, Rock Addiction, was released earlier this week.

So what are we thinking of this cover? Love it, hate it, or couldn’t care less?

Cover and Blurb Reveal: When the Rogue Returns by Sabrina Jeffries

I squealed – yeah, squealed – like a piglet when I saw the cover for Sabrina Jeffries, When the Rogue Returns, the second installment in the Duke’s Men series.

Though this isn’t the fully edited version of the cover, it’s still gorgeous, no?

But for a special bonus treat, Ms. Jeffries revealed that the second novel features a heroine who is a jewellery designer.

“The new cover of When the Rogue Returns, which is coming out late January 2014! She’s a diamond cutter/jeweler, hence the necklace.” (Sabrina Jeffries via Facebook.)

And then I found an official blurb on a UK bookstore website which revealed a little more…

It had been a decade since Victor Cale, first cousin to the Duke of Lyons, had seen his wife. After some royal jewellery went missing from the jeweller’s shop where they worked, Isabel Mertens disappeared. When Victor gets word of a woman who fits his wife’s description, he sets out to confront her. But he discovers that nothing is as it seems-and revenge is never as sweet as true love.

EDITTED TO ADD: Sabrina Jeffries visited by blog – excuse me while I take a moment to let that sink in – and read the blurb I’d posted. She then shared an even more comprehensive blurb with me that I could post, so here it is!

Victor Cale never imagined his sweet, shy wife, Isabella, would use her talent for creating exquisite imitation jewels for criminal pursuits. But there’s no denying it was Isa’s handiwork that turned up in the scandalous and brazen heist of the Dutch royal family’s diamonds after she disappeared into the night.

Ten years later, still reeling from her betrayal and enraged that her duplicitous side was all but undetectable, the sexy investigator heads to Edinburgh, where his cousin Maximilian has landed him a job tailing a wealthy baron’s bride-to-be. Simple enough—until the “fiancée” in question proves to be Isa, masquerading as an alluringly eligible young widow.

No longer the meek and mild newlywed he once knew, the daring woman vehemently asserts that it was Victor who abandoned her. Piecing together the past to prove Isa’s innocence reawakens a volatile passion, hotter than ever. With a decade of secrets between them, Victor and Isa must trust each other in order to bring the scheming thieves to justice without getting burned themselves.

The first blurb is the one from the UK site and the second is the official -maybe – North American blurb that Ms. Jeffries was given with her cover flat.

I don’t know about you, but I am very excited for this novel!

Endless Knight

Hello fellow book cover enthusiasts,

So I have yet to finish reading Kresley Cole’s, “The Arcana Chronicles” – her YA series. But I did adore the cover for the first novel, Poison Princess.

However, the cover for the second novel, Endless Knight, which Kresley Cole revealed yesterday on her Facebook fanpage is…well, it’s less exciting.

The cover follows the same rules as the first novel, such as the boy and girl on the cover, but this time with a background landscape covered in snow instead of fire.

But it somehow falls short of the first one…

It could be because the male model’s hair colour blends with the background, so you think he has an oddly-shaped, bald head at first glance – not that there’s anything wrong with being bald, but you would think that the cover artist would have thought of this, especially after seeing the first copy of the print.

Perhaps, the picture will “pop” on the actual, physical copy of the book – afterall, metallics can work wonders.

If you LOVE this cover, if you HATE it or are somewhere in between, let me know by leaving a comment below. (You are free to rant about your feelings, I promise.)

(aka The Slightly Disappointed)

P.S: If you’re the cover artist, you are free to defend your choice. Perhaps, I just don’t have the artistic eye to appreciate the genius that is the cover of Endless Knight.
